A Long-Standing Console Boundary Finally Breaks

After roughly twenty-five years of being tied to one gaming ecosystem, one of the best-known science-fiction shooter series stepped outside that boundary on July 28, 2026. Halo: Campaign Evolved arrived at the same time on Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, and PC, the first occasion a core Halo game has ever been made available on PlayStation hardware. The release went live worldwide at 8 a.m. Pacific, with PC owners able to download it through Steam or the Xbox app, and members of Xbox Game Pass Ultimate or PC Game Pass gaining entry on day one without buying the game outright.

It is a striking decision for a franchise that helped define what it meant to be a console-selling exclusive. Instead of preserving that legacy untouched, the team at Halo Studios apparently viewed the twenty-fifth anniversary of the original 2001 game as the fitting occasion to open the campaign to players regardless of which system they own.

New Visuals Built on an Old Foundation

What makes this release notable goes beyond simply appearing on more platforms. Unlike the visual touch-up delivered in the 2011 Anniversary edition, Campaign Evolved is a ground-up reconstruction of the original campaign inside Unreal Engine 5, leaning on that engine’s Nanite geometry tools and Lumen lighting to handle the game’s on-screen presentation.

Notably, the underlying gameplay simulation was not rebuilt from scratch. Combat physics, enemy behavior, and weapon ballistics still run on the older Blam engine code, specifically a version derived from Halo: Reach. The reasoning appears to be that years of fine-tuning shaped how the guns, vehicles, and enemy AI behave, and reproducing that feel with an entirely new physics system would risk losing what made the original combat memorable. This mirrors the approach taken with the 2025 rebuild of Oblivion, where a modern rendering layer was placed over older simulation logic rather than reworking gameplay mechanics from the ground up.

Expanded Content Beyond a Visual Refresh

Beyond the engine overhaul, Halo Studios also added new playable content. The campaign now includes reworked stages alongside brand-new ones, plus three extra missions centered on Sergeant Johnson, grouped under the name Operation: Meteorite, which expand on story details absent from the original 2001 release.

On the gameplay side, the remake incorporates features introduced across later entries in the series. Players can sprint, use aim-down-sights targeting, and hold onto power-ups to activate manually rather than triggering them instantly on pickup. Shields and health both regenerate automatically, vehicles can be hijacked mid-battle, and the weapon selection has grown to nine signature firearms sourced from throughout the franchise rather than being limited to the original lineup. These additions reflect changes fans have long requested without an official remake ever delivering them.

One notable omission is competitive multiplayer. Campaign Evolved focuses solely on the single-player and cooperative story experience, and there is no versus mode included at launch.

Shared Progress Across Every System

Cooperative play is where the cross-platform vision becomes most apparent. Two-player local split-screen remains available on consoles, continuing a long-running series tradition, but for the first time the campaign also supports four-player online co-op. That online play works across platforms, meaning someone on PC can team up with friends using an Xbox Series X|S or a PlayStation 5 in one shared session, tied together through a unified account system.

Save data and progress transfer across platforms as well. Completed missions, unlocked Skulls, and cosmetic items all carry over through cross-progression support, so moving between a console and a PC does not reset story progress or collected extras. For a series historically built around couch co-op, extending that idea into a networked, cross-platform format marks a meaningful shift.

Cost, System Needs, and Reception So Far

The Standard Edition released at a price of $49.99, while subscribers to Xbox Game Pass Ultimate or PC Game Pass could access it as part of their existing subscription. Those who purchased the Digital Premium Edition or the Collector’s Bundle received early access starting July 23, five days before the general worldwide launch. On PC, running Unreal Engine 5 requires Windows 11, and the installation size sits near 100 GB, consistent with other modern Unreal Engine 5 titles given their reliance on detailed textures and cinematic content.

Critical reaction has been favorable without being overwhelming. Based on seventy-six reviews tracked by OpenCritic, the game holds an average score of 83, with 89 percent of critics recommending it, placing it in the site’s “Strong” category. That score is reportedly the lowest the franchise has recorded in its twenty-five-year history, though the high recommendation percentage suggests most reviewers still viewed the release positively, even as expectations were high for a complete remake.

Much of the praise centers on how well the team balanced new visuals with familiar mechanics, keeping combat feeling true to the original while updating the presentation, including how the rotating ringworld environment holds together visually during gameplay. Whether this blend of updated rendering and preserved gameplay logic becomes a model for future Halo titles remains to be seen, but Campaign Evolved has already made an impact simply by launching across every major platform simultaneously. For a franchise long associated with a single console brand, that shift alone changes what platform exclusivity means for its future.

For anyone wanting to replay Master Chief’s original mission after years away, or experience it for the first time on a new platform, this release offers one of the most accessible entry points the series has ever had. With day-one access through two major subscription services and cross-platform play included from launch, there is little reason left to hold off.
