Professional urban-forest inventories use trained crews, defined methods, and detailed data. A community project should not pretend to replace that work. Its value is in creating a consistent local snapshot, building interest, and producing organized observations that a city forester, parks department, school, housing group, or neighborhood association can understand. Start small enough that everyone can follow the same method.
Choose one question and a manageable boundary
Decide what the group wants to learn before choosing a tool. You might map public trees along a six-block walking route, note gaps around a school, revisit recently planted trees, or compare shade on two commonly used paths. Set a realistic revisit date and preserve the method.
